Frequently Asked Questions
Find answers to commonly asked questions about our Downfall plywood panels, including grades, applications and bulk purchasing options.
What types of plywood does Silvaris supply?
We offer a versatile range of plywood products, including CDX-rated Sheathing. Additionally, we specialize in downfall grades such as Utility, Mill Certified, Shop, Degrade, Reject and Cull grades for nonstructural and budget-conscious applications.
Can CDX plywood handle structural demands?
Yes, CDX plywood is a trusted choice for structural applications. It’s durable and widely used for subfloors, roofing and wall sheathing.
What are degrade, reject and cull grades best suited for?
These grades are perfect for nonstructural applications, such as creating packaging crates, temporary barriers or industrial manufacturing. They provide an economical alternative without compromising functionality for these specific uses.
Does Silvaris carry HDF, MDF and particle board?
Yes, along with plywood, we offer truckload quantities of HDF, MDF and particle board. These materials are excellent for furniture manufacturing, unique crating applications and interior applications.
How can shop-grade plywood benefit furniture makers?
Shop-grade plywood provides a mostly structural sound panel with minor imperfections, making it a great option for projects that require cutting and finishing, like cabinets or furniture.
What makes utility-grade plywood a cost-effective choice?
Utility-grade plywood is affordable and durable enough for applications like crate packaging or remanufacturing. It’s especially valuable for industrial projects requiring high volumes at lower costs.
What industries typically use Silvaris plywood?
Our plywood serves various industries, including home building, packaging, furniture manufacturing and remanufacturing. We cater to construction companies, manufacturers and retailers.
Are custom sizes or thicknesses available for plywood?
We primarily offer standard-sized panels (4’x8’) in truckload quantities, but our remanufacturing Cut-to-size Program will cut and deliver plywood in the sizes you need, saving your company labor and time.
What's the difference between plywood and OSB?
The main difference between plywood and OSB (oriented strand board) lies in their composition, performance and applications.
Plywood is made by gluing together thin layers (or plies) of wood veneer with the grain of each layer running perpendicular to the next. This cross-grain construction gives plywood greater strength, stability and resistance to warping compared to OSB. It is also more resistant to water damage, making it a better choice for applications where exposure to moisture is a concern. OSB is made by compressing and gluing together layers of wood strands in specific orientations, creating a dense, uniform panel. It is often more affordable than plywood and performs well in applications like subflooring, wall sheathing and roof decking.
OSB is more susceptible to moisture absorption and swelling at the edges if exposed to prolonged wet conditions.
While both materials are widely used in construction, the choice between plywood and OSB often comes down to budget, project requirements and environmental conditions.
